Flatplans

The following designs are the potential ideas I have created for my digipacks. As you will see, the outer back panel on the second design is incomplete. I found it particularly difficult to come up with ideas for this panel, but hope that by re-analysing the two digipacks I previously evaluated, I will be able to create something original. I will now analyse the flatplan digipacks I have created.

Here is the design for my first digipack. When designing this flatplan, I wanted to make sure it would include bold and confident colours and images, this way it would stand out and grab the audiences attention.
Outer Front Panel:
For my outer front panel I decided to incorporate the ideas I discovered from the previous two digipacks I had analysed; by using an image of a close up shot of someones face. I love the idea of using a close up shot, as it appears bold and in your face, which ultimately is my main goal when creating this. The boldness of the red background also jumps out and becomes a key aspect to the overall appearance of the panel. Although I liked the idea of having a dark background (such as that used for Lady GaGa's and FrankMusik's albums), I initially wanted to create something that stood out, as this can constantly be related to the genre of music my song falls under. The brightness of the red appealed to me as it achieves this and what's more, if we use a red Mini Cooper in our video, this will be a prominent aspect, which will ultimately allow my digipack to relate to the video. However, I may opt to change the colour to either blue, green or yellow, as these colours also consist of the elements needed for me to achieve a bold appearance. As you can see I have chosen to place the name of the song over where the mouth should be on my person. I decided to use this effect, as I feel it adds creativeness to the panel and acknowledges it as an inventive piece, instead of dull and unoriginal. When considering the font I will use for the song title, I want to use something that will not only stand out, but something that can easily be related to the genre of music my song falls under. This may involve something edgy, bold and energetic. I would prefer the colour of my font to be black, as I know through previous research that black compliments any colour, leaving me with a productive front outer panel.
When considering props to use for this panel, I liked the idea of blacked out glasses, like those featured on Lady GaGa's album. These appeared a confident feature and I wanted to transfer this onto mine in order to enhance my main image. As you can see around the rim of one of the glasses lens, I have chosen to use different coloured gems in order to improve the visual effect of the panel. I believe that including intricate detail such as this will add to the overall appearance of my digipack and allow it to appear more detailed and complete.
Inner Left Panel:
Designing the inner sections of the digipack are just as important as the outer panels. Although they are not on show for the audience to see until the packaging has been opened, they still feature an important role to the overall appearance of the pack. As you can see from my design, I have chosen to keep my inner sections simplistic, but at the same time artistic. The whole panel will consist of the song title "Gotta Boyfriend" written repeatedly in different colours. Although this idea may seem unexciting and dull, I hope that by changing the font sizes and using several different colours, it will become visually more appealing. The background will be white, allowing for all the colours to compliment each other rather than clash, again giving it a professional look. As for the style of font, it would predominately be the same as that featured on the outer front panel, however, if this appears boring, I may choose to change it in order for it to appear more appealing.
Inner right panel:
The inner right panel will have a similar display to that of the inner left panel. However this time the writing will consist of the artists name - "FrankMusik". The writing will still appear in several different colours and the font size will differ in order to make panel appear more effective. Again the background will be white, allowing for my colours to compliment each other.
Outer Back Panel:
As you can see the outer back panel consists of a random design. I found it extremely difficult to come up with ideas for this particular panel, as I wanted to create something that would appear visually exciting and different to most current back panels. There is no real reasoning for me choosing to use this design and when actually creating my digipack, I will consider other options that allow me to accomplish the above goal.
Again I have chosen to use the same main colours as those featured on my front panel, except this time I have opted to use a second bold colour in the yellow, in order for it to stand out. I am really keen to use bold colours such as these, as I feel they can relate to the genre of music really well and connote positive vibes across to the audience.
For this digipack I decided to substitute a main focal image (such as a picture of the artist), for the track list. By doing this I am allowing the track list to become the most important piece of information on the panel and by using a large and powerful font, this becomes achievable. When designing my digipack on the computer, I want to use a font that connotes a relationship between itself and the style of music featured on the CD. The same font will be used on the outer front panel too, as this display professionalism and allows the digipack to look stylish.
In regards to information such as the barcode and record company information, on this digipack I have chosen to place them on the bottom right hand corner. Although this may appear boring, in order for it to compliment the size of the background design, I figured it would be best to place it in the corner as it is still noticeable and easy for the audience to view, without it pulling their attention away from the other information displayed.
Second Digipack:
Here is my design for my second digipack. As you can see the overall layout of each panel is very different to those featured on my first pack, but through doing this I have been able to develop different ideas as to to what designs go together and which dont.
Outer Front Panel:
I really like the design used for this panel. I decided to incorprate two ideas and combine them as one. The idea of the heart obviously symbolises love, but in relation to the song title "Gotta Boyfriend", it can be associated to the connection a boyfriend and girlfriend share. What's more the lightening bolt going through the heart symbolises the genre of music the song falls under, electro pop. I like the way this panel looks, as it displays a bold and powerful image. I opted to colour the heart green as I wanted it to be unique and different to the stereotypical red heart. In addition the colour green appears striking and vibrant which again allows for the image to become eye catching for its audience. The brightness from the yellow lightening bolt too gives the image an eye catching effect, which ultimately allows the panel stand out. By using bold colours I hope to achieve a unique and memorable digipack and one that can be easily related to not only the theme and title of the song, but also the genre of music it falls under. By layering these colours over a black background, I am not only allowing the colours to blend together, but also the depths of the green and yellow are made to stand out and become more noticeable.
As you can see the title of the song is placed in a scroll. I opted to use this design as it is different and allows the panel to have more visual features. As for the font used for the title of the song, I will use one like I stated for my first digipack above. One that appears energetic and fun. When contemplating which colours I will use for the title, again bold, confident colours will be used. For the design featured on this digipack, maybe either green or yellow or to brighten things up, I may use either red or blue.
Although this panel consists of a fairly simple design, I feel it may be missing something. By this I mean some sort of prop. On my first digipack I included a pair of glasses and although that in itself is simplistic, it adds to the overall image and layout of the pack. When actually designing my pack on the computer, I will take this into consideration and maybe combine ideas from my first digipack with this one.
Inner Left Panel:
When designing this section of the pack I again wanted to leave both this panel and the inner right panel with an eye catching, but simple design. This is how i got the idea to use the diagonal stripes. As you can see, the stripes consist of the same three prominent colours displayed on the outer front panel, however to add effect to this design, the widths of these stripes will vary, providing the panel with a more artistic feel and pattern. I had no particular reason for choosing to use the stripes, but feel it visually appears exciting and bold, which again, is an image I want to create. I am aware that the overall designs on my two inner panels may lack a certain creativity, but my main aim for my digipack is to have both the outer panels steal the limelight and be the main focal image, as it is these two panels that the audience will first notice and first impressions can mean a lot when considering buying something.
Inner Right Panel:
This panel consists of the same design I have used for its neighbouring panel. I am disappointed I was unable to come up with a new design to feature here, but feel that by using a similar design the overall layout of my digipack looks professional. As you can see this time the diagonal stripes start from opposite corners to that of the left panel. I opted to do this, as it allows the panel to look more visually interesting. When actually designing my digipack on the computer, I will incorporate ideas from both this pack and my first one and hope that my two inner panels, will be judge visually exciting and appropriate for this song and genre of music.
Outer Back Panel:
As you can see, for this panel i failed to create a design. Like I stated for my previous digipack, it was this panel that I struggled with the most. Ultimately I want to create a panel that appears eye catching for its audience and consists of features that will compliment and blend well together with the three other panels. I found this hard to do with the three panels I had already created for this digipack and this is one of the reasons I struggled to come up with a design. When actually desigining my digipack on the computer, I am aware that I would like to have a main central image, that appears bold and striking. I am yet to decide on what this image could be, whether it be an image of a person or a drawing I designed like the one featured on the outer back panel of my first digipack stated above. However, whatever image I choose to use, I hope to make visually exciting and fun for the audience to view. The track list will also be placed alongside this image, but again, I will enhance the graphics of the font and size of the text, in order for it to look more appealing and unique. By using techniques such as this I trust that the overall layout of my digipack will look both professional and well done and will unify well with the three other panels of the pack. I am optimistic that the ideas I concoct will fit both the song and genre of music our chosen song falls into and from this, hope to create an original and eye catching final piece.

Flatplan Conclusion:
From analysing my two flatplans, I have been able to develop my ideas and knowledge as to what designs go well together and what doesn't. In addition, I now have several ideas that I feel will enable me to create a well presented digipack that would stand out and catch my intended audiences eye. I hope to incorporate ideas from both digipacks displayed above when designing it on the computer, as I feel this will provide me with my best outcome.

Storyboards

Below are the storyboards we have drawn up which highlight the ideas and the order, in which we want our music video to be made.

Here is the first page of our storyboard. As you can see from our drawings and descriptions, we have decided to go along with the main idea we originally had (which I previously wrote about). The first image drawn displays an establishing shot of a row of houses, this is the foundations for the whole of our video, as it sets the scene and allows the audience to have a feel for the beginning environment. The images displayed on this board may become difficult to shoot, as it may involve a lot of cutting and quick editing in order for our vision to become apparent to our audience. The idea of zooming in and out of windows might also be deemed a problem, as it will be a continuous aspect at the beginning of our video, but hopefully with good editing this can be overcome. The next images continue with the story up until we get the shot of the girls getting ready in their bedroom.

This is our second storyboard. The images continue from the previous board, allowing for a clear understanding as to the order in which our video will be shot. As you can see, both groups continue getting ready, but this time close up shots will be used in order to define detail we feel the audience need to see (MSN conversations on a laptop). Allowing the audience to see such detail will enable them to understand the flow of our story and at the same time, understand some of our characters.

Here is our third set of storyboards. When drawing these images we struggled with picture five. We wanted to include a shot which would show the boys driving past the girls on the bus; so the audience could see both sets of groups together on their journey. However, we decided that this shot would be too hard to shoot, as it would involve us having to do a crane shot, which would be difficult to organise, or would involve a third car travelling behind both the bus and boy's car, which in some circumstances could become dangerous when trying to get the shot. As mentioned before, we may not use the bus scenes if complications arise in regards to us being allowed to film. If this is the case, we will instead shoot footage of the girls making their journey by foot through Brighton.

This fourth set of storyboards involves a lot of action, as it illustrates both sets of groups approaching the end of their journeys. The first image displays a shot from a CCTV camera on the bus. We hope that by including a shot such as this, it will break our video up and give the audience a different perspective of the journey. This shot may become hard to shoot, as it will involve a lot of cleverly planned organisation, but by putting in the effort, we hope to achieve a decent shot that is clear and original. The next shots display our characters reaching their destinations. Here reverse shots will be used in order to show the viewpoint of some of our leading characters. Through using these shots, the audience will feel as if they are actually there, with our characters and this will allow them to feel the reality of our music video.

These final three shots are the climax to our story. It is here the audience are exposed to the conclusion of our groups journey. We are yet to decide on how our video will end and where the ending will take place, but hopefully it will provide the audience with an understanding of our entire video and will flow with the previous scenes.

The Pitch

Below is a pitch we made explaining why we wanted to create a video for FrankMusik's song 'Gotta Boyfriend'. It includes two powerpoints and myself and my group actually performing our pitch.

DVD Digipack

Digipacks are a form of packaging designed for CD's. They are designed to open out like a book, so that one section opens out to the right and the other to the left. For this part of the study, I will be analysing two digipacks that already exist and hope to gain numerous ideas that I will able to transfer and use for my own digipack for the song, "Gotta Boyfriend".
Promo packs are what include all features of what advertise an artists song. For example the music video, digipack, lyrics and advert. Once I have created my digipack, I will then make an advert to go with it and the video. All items included in the promo pack must be linked in someway, this will allow me to come up with numerous ideas as to how I can achieve this.

The first digipack I will be analysing is from Lady GaGa's album 'The Fame'. Being a well established 'pop' artist, some of Lady GaGa's more recent music falls under the 'electro pop' genre. This will allow me to gain ideas from her album cover that I will be able to relate to that of the one I will be making.

Here is the outer front panel of the digipack. The first feature that straight away captures my eye, is the over sized blacked out glasses. The use of the deep colour and size of the image gives a bold and in your face effect and from this, draws in it's intended audiences attention. By using such a bold image, the audience are made aware of the possible types of music the album may include, this is apparent through being able to relate 'elctro pop' music with big, bold, energetic songs and just from the glasses alone, we get the sense that the songs based on this album, will be energetic and dynamic. The idea of using bold, confident images in order to give the audience a sense of the style of music they will be listening to, has provided me with several ideas that I believe will not only make my Digipack more eye catching, but will make it more relevant to the genre of music FrankMusik falls into.

The peroxide blonde of Lady GaGa's hair compliments the black of the glasses and background really well. Although simplistic with the colour choices, the illusion of lights complimenting darks really stands out and allows the image to be become eye catching. In addition, this can also be seen through the contrast of her face. Here again we get light against dark. This cover is a prime example that by using similar and basic colours throughout the cover, you don't always get a boring outcome, instead, you are able to create something original and something that will evidently stand out, which is the main goal. This too has provided me with the knowledge that you don't have to create something with numerous different colours in order for it to look appealing; you can take a more subtle approach and still come out with an eye catching cover.

The use of the red for the writing also compliments the blacks and whites, as it gives the cover an initial bold colour, which too will catch the audiences attention. Although the amount of red used is limited, enough has been applied in order for it to stand out. As the genre of my song is 'electro-pop', bright colours such as reds, yellows, blues and greens may be relevant for me to use, as they relate to the music genre perfectly, after all 'electro-pop' is described as being energetic, catchy and having a consistent beat and i feel these elements would compliment the bold colours stated above.

The effects used on this cover appear to be very minimalistic. Although you get what appears to be diamonds
or glitter scattered across one lens of her glasses and the name of the album written on the opposite lens, the actual design of the cover appears very simplistic. Though the cover appears attractive, when designing my own, I hope to experiment with different ideas in order to make it more visual and original for my intended audience. This will involve using bolder texts and possibly more visual images.

The following image is from the outer back panel of the album. As you can see the colour scheme is very similar to that of the front panel, however this time, where the white mixes with the black, we begin to get a grey/green colour emerging in the centre of the panel. I think it is a good idea to stick with the same colours through the whole of the album, as it allows each panel to compliment each other and looks professional. This is also shown through continuing to use the same font and colour for Lady GaGa's name.

With the image of Lady GaGa being placed in the centre, it straight away draws in the audiences attention and becomes the main focal point for the panel. This technique has provided me with ideas as to how to draw in the audiences attention and how to use images in order for them to appear bold and important. With that said, another eye catching feature, is the diamante microphone and the white glove she is wearing. Using props such as these allow for the overall image of the back panel to be detailed and not boring. Without the use of these props, the overall layout of the panel would lack creativity and may become unappealing to the audience.

With the song list placed on the right hand side of the panel, the layout becomes clear and easy for the audience to read. This is always a bonus, as you want the people whom are going to buy the album to be able to read what songs feature. The same goes for the websites and other important information gathered at the bottom of the panel.

The barcode also signifies importance for the back panel and has given me ideas to play around with, in relation as to where to put it. As for the same as the front panel, although Lady GaGa's layout is simplistic but eye catching, it has provided me with ideas to make a more creative and bold layout, in order for it to stand out and become appealing for my intended audience.

The second Digipack I will be analysing is from FrankMusik's album 'Complete Me'.

Here is the outer front panel for this album. Like Lady GaGa's, the main image is a close up shot of the artist. The idea of using a bold, confident image such as this, allows for the panel to stand out and provides the audience with a more personalised end product, as they are able to relate the music featured on the album with the artist who performed. What's more we can see that the image is placed in the centre of the panel, allowing for this to become the main focal point of the cover, drawing in the audiences attention.

Although again mainly dark colours have been used, by projecting the main photo as a black and white image, we still get the same striking appearance we would get had the photo been in colour. This is achievable by complimenting the image with the black of the background. Just by looking at outer front panels such as this, I am able to gain the knowledge over what colours blend well together; this will become a fundamental aspect that I will need to consider when creating my own.
In addition, another aspect of the cover that also features on Lady GaGa's album, is the bold and bright colour used to illustrate important information. In this case the name of the artist. The size and style of font used for this oozes energy and character, as the colour not only compliments the black of the background, but connotations for this particular colour can also be related to the genre of music featured on the CD; Energetic, vibrant and creative.

Again, in comparison to Lady GaGa's album, no effects have been used to enhance the cover. By looking at the end product we can see no effects were really needed to make the cover look appealing, as it already appears attractive and appealing. However, I believe that by using certain effects, the overall appearance of the cover can be improved and bettered, which ultimately leaves us with a more advanced end product.

This image is of the outer back panel. As you can see, the colour scheme is exactly the same as that used for the front panel, allowing for the album to look professional and original. The style and colour of the font adds to the overall layout of the panel, as being such a bold colour, it becomes the main focal point which draws in the audiences attention. This is a bonus for this particular album, as it has no main image which enables the track list to be the most important aspect of the panel; and of course being a CD, the track list is always of importance.

Effects used for this panel appear to be very visual. The slanting of the writing allows for the overall image of the cover to stand out, which allows it to become more striking and less lacklustre. What's more, what appears to be white petals floating down the cover also adds to the overall effect, as it provides the panel with another image instead of it just being the track list, again prompting the idea of the cover being visual.

The positioning of the barcode and record company information is more central than that displayed on Lady GaGa's album. This has again provided me with different ideas as to where to position important information, as I want it to be noticeable, but at the same time, I want to create something that appears professional and not something that appears to be just thrown together in ten minutes. That's why I believe the positioning of all the information (including the track list and images) is key to me creating an attractive and eye catching back panel.

Through analysing these two digipacks, I have been able to develop the ideas I have for my own. I now have a better understanding concerning which colours compliment each other and the importance this has when considering the professionalism and overall appearance of my end product. Though for my digipack the idea of using bold, powerful colours is appealing, through analysing these covers I have understood that calming the panels down with basic colouring, can also provide me with a high-quality design. From evalutaing these two digipacks, I hope to now be able to create something that represents the genre of 'electro pop' and something that can evidently be related to the song "Gotta Boyfriend".

Narrative

Ideas For Narratives:

When brainstorming with my group over possible narratives we could use in our video, we were able to come up with one specific idea. As the song fits the dance/electro-pop genre, we knew we had to create something that would involve a lot of energy and quick editing in order for the goings on to compliment the beat and lyrics of the song. With this said, once having eliminated some of our weaker ideas, we managed to come up with something that would perfectly fit both the genre and narrative of the actual song. Below is a step by step guide to what we hope our video will look like.

Idea:

The beginning shot will be an establishing shot showing a row of terraced houses down a main street. One idea we have, is that this particular shot will start before the song begins, in order to give the audience the sense that they are actually there (however we are not sure if we will actually do this). The first seven seconds of the song will show a bedroom light turn on in one of the houses, and the camera will slowly zoom into the bedroom, after having a quick glimpse inside and seeing a group of girls getting ready to go out, the camera will zoom out and the bedroom light will be turned off. This will be followed by the same process as before, but this time a bedroom light will be turned on in a neighbouring house and instead it will show a group of boys getting ready. As the beat of the song starts to pick up and the introduction of the song is sung, a display of quick shots between the two bedrooms will be shown, showing the process of the groups getting ready for a night out on the town. These shots will last for roughly the first twenty seconds of the song.

As the song progresses, the main focus of the shots will predominately be focused on two particular individuals, one being the main girl and the other being the leading male character. These establishing shots will allow the audience to see who the main characters of the story are and will last for about thirteen seconds, taking us up to thirty-three seconds in the song.

The following twenty-five seconds of the song, will show the two main characters interacting in someway, whether it be by text message or MSN. These shots will show the boy taking an interest in the girl and them discussing their plans for the evening. An idea we have for these shots is as the boy asks the girl what she is doing tonight, the girl quickly has to go and says bye before answering his question.

Next, will show the boys and girls on their journeys to their destinations. These shots will last for approximately forty-one seconds. One idea we have for the girls journey is for them to travel on a bus. It would be really good if we could get these shots as it would break our video up and give the audience a different perspective to look at. However, we are not 100% sure whether we will include these shots, as it may become difficult for us to actually be allowed to film on a bus, if this is the case, we will instead show the girls making their journey by foot. As for the boys, we will show shots of them setting off in a car. We are hoping to film the two groups travelling through Brighton, as this is where we want the main sections of our video to be shot. This will be a great opportunity to not only shoot footage of the two groups, but also the culture of Brighton, which will ultimately add to the realness and visionary of the video.

The following twenty-four seconds will see the girls having a laugh on the bus and although it might be hard to film, we are hoping that we can film the girls in a way that looks like it is footahe from the CCTV camera on the bus. This way it changes the dynamics of the video and allows us to be creative with our shots. As the girls get off the bus, they see the boys drive pass. By now we are two minutes - four seconds into the song, and this is where the bridge of the song begins. The tempo and beat of the song changes and almost gives a slow motion effect, so here, we would like to slow the footage of our video down and show, as the boys drive pass, the leading characters eyes connect and have them share an intimate few seconds. This will dramatize our video and hopefully give our audience an exciting moment. The shots end with the boys parking their car and making their way up to either a club or Brighton pier (again we are not sure where the ending of video will take place). Here the boys will meet up with the girls This takes us roughly upto three minutes into the song.

The final scenes will show the group of boys mingle with the girls. Then for our final shot we have come up with two possible outcomes; one being the main girl ignores the leading boy completely, or two, the girls turns around and flirts with the main guy and they walk off hand in hand.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene includes everything that features in the frame of the shot. This involves items such as props, costume/make-up, settings and colour. The Mise-en-scene is one of the most important things to consider when creating a video, as it is what the audience will see.
Below are the ideas we have for the Mise-en-scene for our music video:

Setting:
Possibly one the more important aspects when considering the Mise-en-scene for our video, is the setting. The setting allows the audience to become aware of the atmosphere and environment the video is based around; the setting is basically the foundations for our music video. The music video will be set during the early hours of the evening, just as the streetlights turn on. These shots will begin outside a row of houses, paying particular interest in two of the houses. Having then panned into our next setting, our audience will be shown a number of shots focusing around a group of boys getting ready, in a typical teenage boys bedroom, for a night out in the town. We will then cut to shots showing a similar situation in a neighbouring house, but this time it will include a group a girls getting ready in a teenage girls bedroom. The idea of these two shots will ultimately allow the audience to see and follow the process in both sexes getting ready for a night out. This is something that the audience can relate to and clear comparisons can be made between both the audience and the narrative of the storyline.

The following shots will then show the boys (having got ready far quicker than the girls), leaving their house and getting into a car. These shots will be based within a housing estate, to show every step of the boys journey, from leaving the house, to driving off done the road. As the boys drive off, the shot changes to the girls coming out of their house and making their way down towards a bus station.

The setting will then change and focus on showing both the boys and girls journeys to their destinations. This will involve driving through the main high streets of Brighton and filming their drive. As the filming will be set in the evening, we will be able to capture the nightlife of Brighton, which will add to the realness and visualisation of our video. Below are some photos that will demonstrate the types of settings stated above:

Image from Google images. Image of high street at night.

Image from Google images. Image of potential spot the two groups will drive past.

Image from Google. Image of teenage boy's bedroom.

Image from Google images. Image of teenage girl's bedroom.

Props:
As the first few shots of our video will be filmed inside a boys and girls bedroom, the props that we will need to include, in order for the audience to be able to tell what sort of room they are in, will need to be easily related and recognised to the everyday items you would find in a typical teenagers bedroom. This may include items such as hair straighteners

and make-up in the girls room and game consoles and guitars in the boys. This way a clear divided can be made between the two rooms. One item that will be essential for the first couple of shots will be a laptop/desktop computer, this item will fit in with the narrative of our story and will help the audience understand what's happening.

As a lot of our filming will be shot amongst the busy city of Brighton, here we wont need to use specific props. However, two props we will need to use, will be a car (that the boys will be driving) and possibly a bus (if we are able to film the girls on one). For the boys car, we will be using a red mini cooper.
As our characters are meant to be going out for a night on the town, we will be able to film real footage of Brighton's nightlife, this will ultimately add a sense of realness to our video, but will also enable us to not have to use a large amount of extra props.
Costume and Make-Up

When deciding on the clothing our characters would be wearing, we new we would have to make precise and clear decisions in order for the audience to be able to relate our characters with the narrative of the video. Therefore we opted to go with fun, charismatic clothing that would clearly show our characters getting ready for a night out. Clothing such as skirts, leggings, dresses, jewellery, big hair and high heels for the girls and jeans, shirts, t-shirts and nice shoes for the boys. From this, we believe it will be evident for our audience to relate not only the characters with the narrative, but also themselves.

As for make-up, we intend to obviously use this more on our female characters than our male and this will either include natural tones or bright, colourful make-up which will add energy and fun to the overall image of the video. Bright colours such as blues and reds, I feel, will suit the narrative of our video, as they send out connotations of being vivid and vibrant.

When thinking about make-up being used on our male characters, we probably will not have to use a significant amount. However, in order to enhance the quality of our video, we may have to use make-up on these characters in order for the picture of the video to become clearer and for definitions of the characters faces to become more apparent, as due to us filming in the evening, lighting issues may become a problem.
It is very important that we plan our mise-en-scene. As we weill be filming on different days it is crucial that all characters wear the same clothes as previous days, otherwise this will effect the continuity of the video. Mise-en-scene provides the audience with an understanding of the environment and this is crucial in getting them to understand the narrative of the video.

Music Video Planning

The Project And Why We Chose The Song:

For this project, we were asked to get into small groups and design/create a music video, digipack and advert for a specific song. Once in my group, we thought long and hard about what sort of video we wanted to create and after much discussion, we agreed we wanted to make something that would include fast editing, with a song that entailed a fast/constant beat. This is when we came across the song - "Gotta Boyfriend", by Frank Musik. The reasons behind us choosing this particular song vary, as at first we all had our own initial ideas for how the video could pan out and fit with what the song was about. However, for me, although the song is not something I would usually listen to, the rhythm and consistent beat the song exhibits appears memorable and easy to follow. Our song choice is a typical 'dance' track and one that would often feature in clubs and bars. This ties in perfectly with our reasons for choosing the song, as we wanted to create something that displayed lots of energy and fast, quick shots.
Before we were able to embark on creating our music video, we first had to email Frank Musik's record label, in order to see whether or not we were allowed to use this song. Below is a copy of the email my group and I sent to the record label.

As the email is hard to see, I will write it below in order for it to become clearer to read.

Island Records: For our Media coursework we are required to shoot a music video and are in the process of song choice. After much debate we have agreed that Frank Musik's Gotta Boyfriend would be perfect for us to get across a fun and quirky music video that allows a lot of creativity. I am e-mailing to ask for your permission to use this song and film our own music video.

Audience:
One of the most important aspects we had to consider when deciding on which song to use, was who are intended audience would be. As all members of our group are 17 - 18 years old, we thought it would be a good idea if we were to create something we and those of a similar age group (18 -25) could relate to. This would entail us to construct something that would consist of features we are all familiar with, ultimately making the project more enjoyable and providing us with an end product we can all connect with. In addition, we wanted our video to be relevent to FrankMusik's existing audience. This way comparisons can be made between our video and his. To get a feel for who FrankMusik's target audience is, I went onto his MySpace page where I was able to see who his friends were and therefore his fans. The majority of his fans seemed to be males between the ages of 18 - 30, yet many females of similar ages did too follow him. By checking out his MySpace page, I feel I now have a better understanding as to who FrankMusik's audience is and this will help when it comes down to making key decisions for our music video.
Below is a printscreen from his MySpace page, showing some of his top friends (fans).

Lyrics:

Boyfriend

B b boyfriend

Boyfriend boyfriend

Boyfriend

So you gotta gotta boy right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

Cos I know we could maybe, we could share

But I don't think that's very, very fair

It's so more hard when I'm not right here with you

You make me do things, I don't want to do

You call me in and I know there's so much more

Why do you pick me up to kick me to the floor

So you got a boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

Cos I know maybe we could maybe, we could share

But I don't think that's very, very fair

I go to clubs

You go to clubs to

But my friends tell me that I don't have a clue

So you can give me one the next time I'm out

So I got something to scream and shout like

So you got a boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

I know maybe we could, we could share

But I don't think that's very, very fair

So you got a boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

I know maybe we could, we could share

But I don't think that's very, very fair

We could share, aiirrr, aiirrr

Now I wonder, why this way

I don't know where you really strayed

and your empty touch

Fractures all of my skin

How happy I could be with the one without you in

So you got a boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

I know maybe we could, we could share

But I don't think that's very, very fair

Gotta boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

So you got a boyfriend right here

Have you got a boyfriend out there

Above are the lyrics to our chosen song - "Gotta Boyfriend". Although fairly simple to follow and read, they allow the song to have a narrative, which ultimately gives us the chance to develop better ideas and concepts for when we are creating our video.

Other Frank Musik Videos:

I will now analyse and take notes of other music videos created by the artist, Frank Musik. The video I have chosen to study is 'Confusion Girl', which is featured below.

The first thing that grabs my eye when watching this video, are the several quick shots displayed before the song has properly begun. This is a really clever idea, as it allows the audience to establish the different settings of the song. The use of camera shots and angles also give character to the opening scenes, as we are made aware of who the characters in the narrative are, just through the use of mid, long and close up shots.

The idea of the man flying through the air and jumping from one space to another gives the video a high-tech look and feel about it and although this skill would be hard to imitate for our own video, it has allowed me to consider other ideas that could possibly enhance our video and make it appear more creative and exciting.

The video, itself, appears fairly simplistic when considering the settings and props used. However, this simplicity allows for the song to flow and fit well with the goings on in the video. One thing i did notice, was as Frank Musik was walking down the road, all of the recycle bins were coloured pink. Now throughout the video the background colours appear natural and nothing really stands out and grabs the audience's attention, until you all of a sudden are hit with a random piece of bright colour. This can be seen from the pink recycle bins, the clown holding the balloons, the purple dress the girl is wearing and even down to the small things such as the brightly coloured bin bags. It all adds to the effect of the video and makes it appear more vibrant and creative for the audience to be watching.

The costumes used in the video display both an old and new look, as we have Frank Musik wearing a checkered suit with brown trousers, giving off more of a dated look and then we have Holly Valance wearing a short, sexy purple dress, looking like shes ready to go out for a night on the town. These two different contrasts also add something to the video as we can tell they are two very different people, yet at the end of the video they embrace one another and kiss. Props used nearer the end of the video also support the old vs new look, as we see both characters holding a mobile phone, Holly's being a modern, trendy one and Frank's being an old, unfashionable one that you would expect to see in the 1980's.

From analysing this video, it has allowed me to see different techniques and skills used to create a simplistic, but, visionary piece of work and from this I hope to incorporate some of these ideas into our video. The special effects used have prompted me to consider certain objectives that will help exalt our video and make it more eye catching and appealing for its audience.

The video may take a minute to load.
